Wedding Cookout Help?

STEPHANIE asked:

My fiance and I recently realized (took a while) that even attempting to pay for a modest ($5000-$8000) wedding is just impossible. Neither of our parents are able to help out and quite frankly, we just don’t think it’s practical to spend all that money for 1 day. GRANTED it is the first day of our marriage, but when we talked it over we came to this conclusion: having an $8000 wedding doesn’t mean we love each other any more than having a $2000 wedding. We’re also new grads with new careers and live check to check so again, attempting to save $8000 is too much to expect.

On the lines of a much cheaper wedding I think it would be more fun and more laid-back if we had a wedding cookout! Our idea is to ask his mom and sister if we can utilize their land to set up a big tent, rent tables and chairs, and have 75 people over for our ceremony and reception.

I’m going to return the dress I have and go with an elegant white dress from Old Navy or someone (as long as it’s simple, relaxed, and elegant). The groom and the groomsmen can all wear tan khaki shorts with any variation of a blue collared top. My bridesmaids can wear any variation of a blue dress they want.

As for food and drinks, we plan on doing traditional cookout stuff.

My questions: does anyone have any other ideas/suggestions? has anyone been to a wedding like this and if so, what did you think?
Update

We do have a professional photographer for free. We have a JP marrying us for free. We are not hiring a DJ and instead we made our song list on our iPod. I quoted a tent, table, chairs, and a dance floor for $900 including setup and breakdown fees. We plan on doing evite invitations. The favors are going to be a selection of framed pictures of ourselves that people can choose from. We live in NH so liquor is super cheap and we figure we’ll spend about $200-$250 on it – all top shelf. We are doing cupcakes instead of a traditional cake. We’re either having the event catered or we’re doing the food ourselves… and that’s about it until I think of something else.

Wedding Troubles. Please can you help?

Fiery Bride asked:

Hello, this is a long one but PLEAAASSSSE help if you can.

More than anything I want a big, white wedding, a dress, bridesmaids, hotel reception, flower centrepieces, wedding gifts etc. But my Mum and Dad are divorced and I CANNOT have them in the same room. I know a lot of people will say “just talk to them, they’ll be civil for one day!” But they WON’T. My mum’s husband threatened to kill my Dad as did my Mum’s bro. My Dad has hated my Nan for as long as I can remember, and my Dad tried to stop them from seeing me as a child. Both families have punched each other, smashed each others windows and slashed each others tyres and my Dad even has a stab wound.

So I HAVE TO ELOPE, there is no other way. I can’t invite one without the other, and so I shall have to elope just me and my partner. This is making me depressed for two reasons:

1. My partners parents wont get to see him get wed
2. I really want the wedding i’ve always dreamed of.

What can I do? It’s hopeless
PS: Please don’t say to just marry infront of my partners parents – if my family find out they’ll say “oh we wont argue for one day” but on the day they definitly will.

Any cheap ideas for a wedding in Fall 2009?

Derricks Angel asked:

My fiance and I are having our wedding in October 2009 and are using persimmon (redish/orange) and gold as our two main fall colors with hints of brown and greens. We want our wedding to be very fallish so we have already bought silk leaves (which will be used on each side of the aisle and on our tables at the reception) and have ideas of what we want for our centerpieces (floating candles). His aunt is making our wedding cake and my church is preparing the meal (traditional Thanksgiving meal) so these things are covered. Our favors…we have no idea what to do as we are having 150 guests to make favors for. We know we don’t want to use any food products so maybe candles or something. Anyways, if you have any simple but elegant ideas please let me know. I can’t wait to hear from all of you. P.S. Incase this matters my dress is ivory and my bridesmaids are persimmon. My fiance is wearing an ivory tux and his men are wearing brown tuxes.
