Jane Austen’s Pride And Prejudice – Marriage Proposals Or Insults?

Monday, October 19th, 2009
marciano guerrero asked:

How Mr. Collins proposed to Elizabeth Bennet:

Not long ago, Mary Patricia and I saw a movie based on the Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice. The scenes in which Mr. Collins and Mr. Darcy proposed to Elizabeth Bennet made us cringe with disgust.

This is what Mr. Collins says in a boorish preamble:

“Almost as soon as I entered the house I singled you out as the companion of my future life. But before I am run away with by my feelings on this subject, perhaps it will advisable for me to state my reasons for marrying-and moreover for coming into Hertfordshire with the design of selecting a wife, as I certainly did.”

Next he offers his reasons:

“My reasons for marrying are, first, that I think it a right thing for every clergyman in easy circumstances (like myself) to set the example of matrimony in his parish. Secondly, that I am convinced it will add very greatly to my happiness; and thirdly-which perhaps I ought to have mentioned earlier, that it is the particular advice and recommendation of the very noble lady whom I have the honour or calling patroness.”

One can understand that Mr. Collins is a ridiculous character whose actions and speech are deliberately inserted in the novel to bring about the much needed comic relief. But Mr. Collins isn’t joking-he is quite serious!

And speaking of seriousness, we find that the most serious character of the entire cast, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, uses the same boorish and unromantic marriage proposal; a proposal even more despicable than that of the loathsome Mr. Collins.

How Mr. Darcy proposed to Elizabeth Bennet

Again, a boorish preamble:

“In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire you.”

Next he offers his reasons. The exact words may have been too painful for the readership of the times; and in good sense the author has the narrator to intimate them only. Instead the narrator tells us about Darcy’s expectations:

“He [Mr. Darcy] concluded with representing to her the strength of that attachment which, in spite of all his endeavors, he had found impossible to conquer; and with expressing his hope that it would now be rewarded by her acceptance of his hand. As he said this, she could easily see that he had no doubt of a favourable answer. He spoke of apprehension and anxiety, but his countenance expressed real security.”

When Elizabeth rebuffs him with a scathing speech of which the most memorable line is “…and I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed to married,” Mr. Darcy instead of making a graceful exit, insists by remarking on his superiority of status, his superiority of connections, and by the vulgarity of Elizabeth’s family members.

Mr. Collins and Mr. Darcy’s proposal were insults and affronts rather than honor and homage to the beloved.

Nothing in their speech projects love but coldness and arrogance.

Although I was not quite eighteen years of age when I proposed, I instinctively knew that it is the man’s role to woo the beloved and win her hand in a way that is warm and loving. The man’s speech (proposal) I was sure would have to be clear and filled with ‘you’ and not with ‘me’ or ‘I.’

How I proposed to Mary Patricia:

When we were in between classes Mary Patricia and I would meet either at the sun dial or by the sycamore tree in front of Lewisohn Hall. Without any experience in amorous proposals, and fearful that my nervousness would botch up what could be the most momentous occasion of my life, one afternoon sitting under the old tree I scribbled a few notes on an index card.

Then as if under the spell of a guiding force, as we stood under the sycamore tree, this is what I read to her:

“Since we met, you’ve made me a better student, a better person: kinder and nobler. And I now have a burning desire to succeed in life; not because of me, not because of my family, but because I want you to think of me as a worthy person.

“If I always feel compelled to hold your hand and to put my arms around you, it is because I want to make sure you are human, that you aren’t an angel or a goddess. I cannot imagine the rest of my life without you by my side, for you and your music are everything to me now: when I’m awake I think of you, when I sleep I dream of you, and in my dreams you are my hypnosis, my delirium, and my peace.

Having read my scribbling, and as I got down on one knee, I asked Mary Patricia:

“Will you marry me-will you marry this poor boy from the Andes who was born to love you forever?”

Britt asked:

My bf and I are planning on getting married within the next 3 years. We want it simple (hopefully a little cheaper too). Since we live on the coast of Florida, we want a beach wedding. For the reception, we wanted to have a cook out type theme. We thought it would be nice, fun, and beautiful. We wanted to this to save some money so that we could go on a nice honeymoon and to also save money in general. What do you think? Any ideas to add on to this?

Is it a southern thing to be married so young?

Thursday, October 1st, 2009
Akasha asked:

I’m from NY moved to Atl. One of my coworker (22) did everything from going on a radio show (to win a ring) to planned her own a romantic trip just so her bf can propose. Her bf every told her why would he propose when she was the one who planned the trip and something he loves her and sometime he can’t stand her. She hads tantrums when one of her friends are engaged. Went on sites where you can dress your wedding party, picks out dresses & ring. Hangs pics of herself holding a friends baby while sitting next to her BF in her cube and on mysapce. She always saying all her friends are married. Her bf finnnnnally proposed this pass Sat 7/07& the wedding date is (get this) oct/07. Girl has every plan out already. The older women are encouraging this.
She’s just one example of this behavior I’ve encountered living down here so I just wondered if thats is how some are conditioned to be. I know every little girl dreams of their wedding but this is a little much.
1st off eharrah1 I’m proud to be a as you put it “a Yankee” I’m free to live where ever I prefer this is the United States right? So keep your narrow minded attitude to yourself. 2nd this was not a question to try to change things it was a question to understand a different way of living. Nor is this a matter of blaming anything on where one lives. I & some others aren’t use to seeing this push to be married. I understand ppl get married young all the time but to me it’s more pronounced down here. The 22 is not the issue, it’s the “I have no other goals in life but to be married attitude”.

Can someone tell me what my dream means (long)?

Thursday, October 1st, 2009
?§GraciedollfacexD§? asked:

Ok, so in this dream it like i was arm in arm with my child hood best friend (who i haven’t seen since i was seven years old.) (I just reunited with him about a month ago.) We were walking in a mall and we walked by my ex best friend we both started swearing at eachother and when i won, we walked away, then the dream changed and i was at some house and i was part of a hespanic family (I’m caucasian). I was next to my ‘mother’ and she opened a closet door. Inside was a short, wrinkly, desinigrating old woman like ghost thing next to the vacum cleaner. (It was almost like a small puppet too) We both screamed and slammed the door and hid under the table, then it was like time passed and i ended up in the closet next to the ghost like thing, it’s eyes following me and i screamed again, running out of the closet and it started chasing me around the house, but then once again it was like time passed and it was chasing my ‘little sister’. Again, time passed and it was still in the closet and it seemed like the terror was over. I told my ‘mom’ that i was leaving and she said she wasn’t because she lives in this house. I screamed to her to come with me and bring the family, but she wouldn’t, so i just said fine, i’m leaving and she told me to go. I was awe-struck, but walked out of the house and i was in a field. I sat down on a picnic blanket with my child hood best friend and i kept thinking what if the ghost will kill my ‘family’ and then come after me? But the thing was, the ghost wouldn’t come out of the house, so i was safe. Then, my dream went back to the mall and me and my child hood friend walked into a wedding, that my ex best friend was invited to and then, we were friends again (me and my ex best friend) and talking and everything and then when the bride and the groom kissed, me and my child hood friend kissed.
Then, i took a nap today and me and my real best friend were crawling on a playground and i was swearing at one of my other good friends. I didn’t know why, but we started chasing her, (me and my best friend) and then there was this computer thing and we went on some chat site and met some guy named Aaron. (Then we were back at my house adn my mom made a profile on the chat site) He was a cripple in the hospital and i fell in love with him over the interent thing, so me and my best friend went on this go cart bus thing (Like the slow moving white things at zoos) to the hospital to meet him, but then on the way there, my math teacher told me to give her my password to my e-mail. I told her my mom has it and then both me and my best friend walked to some hill thing and looked at the hospital from affar. Then, i was back at the playground and my math teacher told me to tell my good friend i was sorry for swearing at her, so me and my bestfriend crawled all over the equipment and through tunnels and told her we were sorry. Then i woke up. Can somebody tell me what my dreams are telling me or what they mean?
