Well the delimma is that my Fiance’ and I have planned to get married at the courthouse, which is alot of cheaper. However, we have decdied to purchase the tux and dress and have professional pictures taken at our reception we are planning. I am stuck on ideas for our reception. I need cheap but good foods, something that is presentable.I am thinking of having finger / snack type foods. I am also interested what your ideal ideas are for the cake and centerpieces. Music and alcohol ideas as well. I have considered choosing only three varieties of liqour, and a few bottles of each. I havent chosen which ones, but I hear that vodka is top demand. I need a few good simple mixed drink ideas- I have an aunt who is a former bartender, so thats not a problem. What ideas do you have for music b/c I’m honestly not interested in a DJ, it would cost more than I want to pay coming from here. Also gift ideas/favors.

Ok, there are lots of things that you can do in regards to food. What I suggest is looking at some catering websites. They often post their menu’s online and they can give you some good ideas/suggestions.
But, I would stick with simple foods – cheese/cracker tray, fruit/veggie tray, shrimp cocktail, mini quiches, stuffed mushrooms, chicken kabobs, Italian meatballs, pasta salads, devilled eggs, chips & salsa, etc.
Are you going to be making your own cake? You could always do one of those cupcake cakes? They look and taste yummy. Or you could go to wilton.com – they have tons of ideas for wedding cakes/decorations.
As for centerpieces, you can keep them fairly simple. A few candles, mirror, and rose petals sprinkled on the table would look nice. Maybe something like this: ,%20Centerpiece,%20Glass%20Bowl%201.gif
For music, just have someone hook up their IPOD or computer and rig up a play list. You could maybe even have one of your friends be the MC for the evening. It’s really not all that hard.
As for drinks, just keep it simple – maybe offer martini’s, screwdrivers, cranberry juice and vodka, rum and coke – ask your aunt what she thinks would be the best. Since she is a former bartender she will know what drinks are the most popular/easy to make.
I hope that this helps! Good luck! ?

Music – You could prepare the music ahead of time or put a friend in charge of it (set them up with a computer hooked up to speakers and an Itunes-like setup to play stuff – they are only to stop the songs for events or they could take requests).

Drinks – One way to make the alcohol tab cheaper is to come up with signature drinks for each of you… offer champagne, a red and white wine and the signature drinks – post a little menu at the bar then you won’t have so many people asking the bartender for specific drinks. Don’t have to be too crazy with the drink ideas… a Cosmo-like drink or even a screw driver with a splash of exotic juice (mango, pomegrante etc) then you can add your own garnish to and give it a cute/unique name etc…I’ve also seen people put out a set # of bottles of wine on each table and thats that… no extras – kept people from getting trashed.

Food – Keep in mind that you don’t want things that are too greasy. Do you want hot or cold foods? You could pick up several deli trays and lay them out with choices of bread/rolls, cheese etc… – go BBQ style and see if someone will volunteer to run a grill etc. Many people may be willing to bring drinks etc. I love Bruschetta, its so cheap and with a little goat cheese on a toasted baguette slice (or mini bagel) its passes for a catered appetizer.

Cake – Many people are doing just a small cake for the head table/cutting ceremony and getting a sheet cake of the same flavor to be cut in the back and passed out.

Centerpieces – Ikea – buy vases/glasses, put candles in, sprinkle flower petals around the bases (don’t have to be rose petals.. there are cheaper petals out there).

Mixed Cds can be a good/cheap favor (not sure how legal they are.. shhh!). Also heard of using mini vases in the flower arangements then making those the favors etc.. combine stuff like that when you can!

I made some really cute and inexpensive centerpieces for my wedding. They were a big hit! (If I do say so, myself.)

    I wrote a how-to-make article on them:

Let me know what you think!
    Hope this helps!
